Dozens of Injured San Jose Firefighters Denied Workers’ Comp Treatment

Dozens of injured San Jose firefighters, 68 in all, have filed complaints with the city since late 2014 alleging they were denied the medical care that was promised to them. The city says the complaints state that Athens Administrators, the private company contracted by the city to handle half of San Jose’s workers’ compensation claims, improperly rejected requests for medical treatment needed to get those firefighters healthy and back to work.

Second study says medical errors third-leading cause of death in U.S.

Medical errors kill about 250,000 people a year, a new study from a well-known Johns Hopkins medical school professor and author said Tuesday.The study by surgeon and Johns Hopkins professor Martin Makary is the second to report the mistakes represent the third-leading cause of deaths in the U.S.Death certificates in this country don't have a place for hospitals to acknowledge medical error, which the authors say shows reporting needs to be improved so the problem can be better estimated and addressed.

State fines Loma Linda University Medical Center $50,000 after resident’s mistake

LOMA LINDA >> State public health officials on Wednesday announced they have fined Loma Linda University Medical Center $50,000 after an intern placed a feeding tube in a patient’s lung instead of the stomach.The accident, in 2010, was fatal.The California Department of Public Health issued 10 penalties to 10 hospitals after investigations found the facilities’ noncompliance with licensing requirements caused or were likely to cause “serious injury or death to patients.”

California hospitals penalized thousands for medical errors

Ten California hospitals were penalized a total of $700,000 Wednesday after state health inspectors found deficiencies in care that resulted in one patient being abandoned on the side of the road to wait for transportation and another dying because a feeding tube was inserted incorrectly.The California Department of Public Health released the list of penalties as it does periodically, along with inspection reports that offer details into why and how the medical errors occurred. Hospitals fined include those in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

When an injured patient “wins” a medical malpractice case, where does the money go? Well, if he or she needs medical care, the money pays for that care, which the person did not need until they were hurt. In other words, much of the money (ironically) goes right back into the health care system to treat injuries that the medical industry itself inflicted.
