How many work injuries occur in the public sector?

From construction site accidents to mishaps that occur in office spaces, this blog has covered many of the different types of workplace accidents that leave employees with injuries. While these accidents occur far too often in the private sector, it is also important to understand how many public sector workers are hurt in California, and other parts of the U.S., every year.

During 2015, roughly 752,600 people who work for local or state governments suffered a work-related illness or injury, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While this figure represents a notable decline in comparison to 2014, it is still far too high. With roughly 18.4 million local and state government workers, the prevalence of injuries in 2015 results in an illness and injury rate of 5.6 out of every 100 full-time employees.

For those who are hurt at work, the consequences of the injury can be life-altering regardless of whether they work in the private or public sector. On a regular basis, more and more workers find themselves in this position and they may have a number of struggles, such as physical pain, mental trauma, medical costs and lost wages. In some cases, an illness or injury suffered at work may prevent an employee from ever returning to their previous position, which can permanently alter the course of their life.

Fortunately, some injured workers are able to use available resources and move on. For some, workers’ compensation has helped them put the workplace accident behind them and restore the quality of life they enjoyed beforehand.
